Fishing in the Bahamas
Don't Miss Out on an Unforgetable Experience
What You Need to Know First
Many people contact us explaining that they have always wanted to come on a Bahamas fishing trip, but were afraid to since they have never been sport - fishing before. This short article will give you some fishing tips, concentrating mostly on the unique features of fishing in the Bahamas.
The Basics of Fishing
Many beginners of sports like tennis and golf start by receiving lessons from professionals. The pros walk through the basics of the sport, and their students are taught proper form and technique. But most people are introduced to fishing by their fathers or grandfathers, who can sometimes teach bad habits along with good ones.
By learning from a professional, you can avoid these mistakes. You can either search for a local fishing professional to learn from or make sure that your Bahamas Charter Company provides at least basic instruction as part of their packages.
Here are a few tips that can help make your first outing successful:
- Before leaving make sure you are prepared. This may mean taking motion-sickness medication if that is a problem for you.
- As well you should discuss the basic techniques with your Captain or crew.
- Each rod will have to be setup with either live bait or lures depending on the type of fish you want to catch. During your first few outings it is probably best to leave this up to the charter company.
- While on the boat the crew will either, have your rod trawling or stop and let you manually cast your fishing rod.
- Make sure to listen to your Captain or other crew members. They will help you avoid mistakes.
If all of this seems daunting, do not worry. Professional charter companies will take care of most of the setup work for you, leaving you to reel in your catches and enjoy the rest of the experience.
Where To Fish
The Bahamas offers many great fishing locations it can sometimes be an overwhelming decision deciding where you want to go fishing.
Two of the better known locations are around Nassau, the capital area of the Bahamas and Paradise Island. If you do not have a lot of time to spend fishing, make sure to find a charter company that specializes in fishing trips to those locations. If you do have more time we recommend you fish near one of the lesser known gems in the Bahamas.
If you want to catch a specific type of fish or are having trouble deciding where you want to go, it might be easier just to contact your fishing charter company and have them help you make a decision.
When To Fish
From June to November is hurricane season in the Bahamas. We still receive many visitors then but you may need to reschedule if there is a hurricane. Make sure to plan ahead and have backup plans if you schedule during that time.
The other factor that will determine when you should come is what type of fish you would like to catch.
